What Cline is
Cline is a coding agent with planning, file edits, terminal tools, checkpoints and approval controls. It can connect to supported local or cloud models, allowing the developer to choose the inference provider rather than treating the client and model as one inseparable product.
The controls are relevant because a coding task can affect both files and the development environment. A checkpoint helps make changes inspectable, while an approval gives the developer a chance to review an action. Turning on automatic approval changes that working boundary.

An illustrative trial starts with a small issue and a known test. Ask for a plan, inspect the files and commands involved, then review the resulting change against the acceptance criteria. If you compare models, keep the same task and controls so that a difference in permissions is not mistaken for a difference in reasoning quality.
Examples described as illustrative or proposed trials are editorial suggestions. Documented real builds, when available, are linked separately below.
Requirements, cost and limitations
Use a supported client/model configuration and account access where required. Inference billing is separate from the client. The repository is Apache-2.0; the current pricing page lists the JetBrains extension under Enterprise. Check the exact distribution and service terms rather than assuming every integration has the same access conditions.

Cline fits a developer who values model choice and visible review points. Aider offers a terminal pair-programming approach, while an integrated workspace may suit someone who wants fewer separate components. Provider compatibility is a starting requirement, not proof of reliable edits on a particular repository.
