What Gemini Notebook is
Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, is a source-centered workspace. You supply a collection of material and ask questions or develop outputs from that collection. It can provide cited answers and source-derived audio, slides or video, making the selected documents the starting point of the task.
The source-chat mode is useful for a defined collection of notes, reports or readings. Optional agentic features can also search the web, run code and create files, with or without supplied sources; they are a different mode from answering only from your documents. Check which mode and sources a task uses. Google-file imports omit footnotes and comments, and generated citations still need checking.
Read the official documentationHow it fits into a workflow
Collect the relevant sources, ask a specific question and inspect the cited passages. Build an outline from the checked findings before asking for a presentation or other rendered output. Documented outline and producer-note controls provide a place to review the intended structure before rendering, rather than accepting the first polished result as final.
Examples described as illustrative or proposed trials are editorial suggestions. Documented real builds, when available, are linked separately below.
Requirements, cost and limitations
Check current account and plan access, source limits and supported import formats. Use only material you are authorized to provide. The source collection narrows the task, but connected or agentic actions still require attention to their permissions and effects.
Check current access and pricingWhen to choose it and what to compare
Choose a source notebook for sustained work on a defined collection. Perplexity is a different starting point for finding web sources, and AnythingLLM offers a configurable document-workspace approach. For one short document, ordinary search or manual notes can remain the simpler option.
