What GitHub Copilot is
GitHub Copilot provides coding assistance across suggestions, codebase questions, edits, reviews and supported agents that can produce pull requests. A pull request is a proposed set of changes for others to review before merging. These features connect assistance to an existing software-development process.
The product is distinct from Microsoft Copilot in Microsoft 365. It also includes different interaction modes: a suggestion while you type is not the same as delegating an issue to an agent. The mode, plan and organization policy determine which actions are available.
Read the official documentationHow it fits into a workflow
For an illustrative delegated issue, describe the bug, expected behavior and acceptance check. Inspect the resulting pull request for scope, implementation and test evidence before merging. A proposed change is a reviewable artifact, not proof that the issue is solved merely because an agent opened it.
Examples described as illustrative or proposed trials are editorial suggestions. Documented real builds, when available, are linked separately below.
Requirements, cost and limitations
Confirm support in your editor, plan and organization settings. In the current plan comparison, Free includes limited coding assistance but does not include code review or assigning work to an agent that creates pull requests. Those workflows require an eligible paid plan. Hosted services and model processing may be involved even when you work in a local editor; repository access should match the task.
Check current access and pricingWhen to choose it and what to compare
GitHub Copilot is relevant when assistance should fit an established GitHub workflow. A dedicated coding workspace or terminal agent may suit a different working style. Choose by the actions and review path you need rather than assuming all Copilot-branded products have the same capabilities.
