What Microsoft Copilot / Microsoft 365 is
Microsoft Copilot and eligible Microsoft 365 integrations bring AI assistance into familiar work such as drafting in Word, analyzing material in Excel, preparing PowerPoint content and summarizing Outlook messages. This is distinct from GitHub Copilot, which serves software-development workflows.
The attraction is working near the files and applications you already use. That does not mean every Copilot feature is available in every Microsoft product or account. Platform, language, plan and organizational licensing can determine which actions are present.
Read the official documentationHow it fits into a workflow
An illustrative work sequence starts with approved notes, develops a draft in Word and turns the reviewed points into a presentation. In a spreadsheet task, inspect the formulas and source ranges as well as the written explanation. The application context can make the work convenient, but the resulting file still needs a human check.
Examples described as illustrative or proposed trials are editorial suggestions. Documented real builds, when available, are linked separately below.
Requirements, cost and limitations
Confirm the application, device and license before planning a workflow. In the current personal-plan comparison, Microsoft 365 Family AI features belong to the subscription owner, not every family member. Copilot in Excel requires AutoSave and a file saved to OneDrive; it does not work with unsaved files. Organization licensing and policies are separate, and supported features still vary by device and language.
When to choose it and what to compare
Consider this when your deliverables already live in Microsoft 365 and the required integration is available to you. A general assistant may be useful outside that environment. Compare the actual in-application actions and permissions, rather than treating all products named Copilot as the same assistant.
