These tools connect an agent to a browser in different ways. agent-browser uses shell commands; Playwright MCP supplies tools through the Model Context Protocol. Start with the interface your existing agent supports.
How to choose between these options
A browser tool does not supply the whole assistant. The surrounding system chooses the task, interprets the page and decides which action to request. agent-browser is a natural option to investigate for an agent already using command-line tools, while Playwright MCP fits a client organized around MCP integrations.
Both approaches depend on observing the current page and checking the result of an action. Test a harmless, authorized workflow with a known finish state, including what happens after navigation or a failed action. Compare integration effort and verification quality rather than assuming either interface guarantees a lower error rate or safer access.
Documented comparison: agent-browser vs Playwright MCP
Decision
agent-browser
Playwright MCP
What it is
A browser-automation CLI for shell-capable agents, using compact accessibility snapshots and element references to drive web pages.
Microsoft's MCP server exposes Playwright browser actions to compatible assistants through structured accessibility snapshots.
Primary integration
Command-line interface for a shell-capable agent.
MCP server for an MCP-capable client.
Page representation
Compact accessibility snapshots with element refs and output filters.
Structured accessibility snapshots exposed through MCP tools.
Operational setup
Native CLI plus an installed or connected browser.
Node.js, browser setup and MCP client configuration.
Safety model
Documented allowlists and action confirmations are opt-in.
The project explicitly is not a security boundary; rely on client and environment controls.
Good starting fit
An existing coding agent that already executes shell commands.
An assistant whose established integration layer is MCP.
A fair comparison starts with the same job. Models, agent products, automation platforms and inference engines are not interchangeable. The second selector narrows to compatible entries. Even then, use the same task, configuration and hardware for an actual test.
No independent tests were run. Official facts and editorial assessment are separate. The comparison link contains entry identifiers, not account or watchlist data.
