What AnythingLLM is
AnythingLLM organizes document-centered AI work into workspaces and connects them to a chosen model. It supports document retrieval: finding passages that seem relevant to a question and supplying them to the model. This is different from assuming the model has memorized every document correctly.
Its desktop, self-hosted Docker and cloud options have different operating responsibilities. The full data path can include a language model, an embedding model that represents passages for search, and a vector database that stores those representations. Each choice affects where data is processed.
Read the official documentationHow it fits into a workflow
Create a focused workspace, import a document and ask a question whose answer you can verify in the original. The retrieval stage selects supporting material and the language model writes an answer. Compare the answer with the passage, including questions the document cannot answer, before relying on a larger collection.
Examples described as illustrative or proposed trials are editorial suggestions. Documented real builds, when available, are linked separately below.
Requirements, cost and limitations
Choose the application edition and compatible model, embedding and storage backends. Desktop is single-user; multi-user workspaces are available through the server/Docker edition and the managed Cloud offering. The repository has MIT terms, while cloud offerings and model services have separate terms and costs. A local app alone does not establish that every selected backend is local.

AnythingLLM fits a document workspace where you want to choose the components. A simpler PDF search may be enough for one short manual. Gemini Notebook offers a hosted source-centered alternative, while Open WebUI is a broader interface whose exact document workflow should be evaluated separately.
