What ComfyUI is

ComfyUI is a visual environment for assembling generative-media workflows. Its nodes represent steps such as loading a model, supplying inputs and transforming an output. Connecting those nodes makes the process visible and reusable, rather than hiding everything behind a single Generate button.

It can support image, video, audio and other workloads when the chosen models and components support them. The graph is especially useful when you need to repeat a creative process with controlled changes. It does not make every model or extension compatible with every workflow.

How it fits into a workflow

A creator begins with a documented template, selects compatible model files and changes a prompt or input image. The graph records how those inputs pass through the generation steps. Saving it preserves the recipe for another run, although reproducing the result also depends on model files, versions and settings.

Examples described as illustrative or proposed trials are editorial suggestions. Documented real builds, when available, are linked separately below.

Requirements, cost and limitations

Memory needs depend on the model and the entire graph, including resolution and intermediate processing. The core uses GPL-3.0 terms, while models and extensions have their own terms. Custom nodes execute code, so installation is a software-dependency decision, not merely adding a harmless visual block. Optional API nodes call remote model services and can incur charges even when ComfyUI itself runs on your computer. Check the nodes in a workflow before treating it as local-only.

When to choose it and what to compare

Choose ComfyUI when understanding and reusing the pipeline is worth a learning curve. Krita AI Diffusion keeps generation closer to a painting canvas; Runway offers hosted creative workflows. Those are different working styles, not a ranking of which application always produces better art.
