Try it with fictional data first.
Read the complete sample input
Practice brief: use your own rights-cleared, front-facing photograph of a matte blue bottle. Plain background, sharp focus, approximately 1024 x 1024 pixels. Keep crop, scale, silhouette and the exact original label unchanged. A: warm beige paper. B: pale blue studio sweep. C: muted sage paper. Deliver three PNGs and the layered Krita working file. No generated sample photo is supplied or represented as a real product.
Documentation-based recipe and practice brief. No generation, Krita plugin workflow, pixel-preservation experiment or sales-lift test was run.
Know what you need.
Krita’s layers preserve the original product cutout above the generated background. SDXL is a deliberately established selection-editing baseline. Record the actual installed checkpoint filename; do not mix its controls or LoRAs with another architecture.
- Your own rights-cleared, sharp product photo on a plain contrasting background
- Krita 5.2+ and the compatible 1.x Krita AI Diffusion plugin for Krita 5.x
- A supported local GPU or an optional Interstice cloud account. Start with an opaque matte object, not glass, reflective metal or hairlike edges.
Krita and the plugin can run locally without a per-image service charge. Compute, downloads and the particular model license still matter. Interstice’s hosted route has separate plan and credit terms.
From input to something usable.
Install the matching plugin and workload
Use Tools, Scripts, Import Python Plugin from File; enable it and restart Krita. Open Settings, Dockers, AI Image Generation, Configure. Choose Local Managed Server and its SDXL workload, or Online Service if you deliberately choose paid remote compute. Krita 5.x uses the plugin 1.x line; do not assume a future 2.x package targets the same Krita version.
Official instructionsMake a precise cutout on the plain background
Save a .kra working copy. On the photo layer, use the Contiguous Selection tool on the plain background and Shift-click disconnected background areas. Invert to select the bottle. At 100% zoom, refine the boundary with Polygonal Selection in Add/Subtract mode, following the lid and base; use selection-mask display to spot holes. Keep the real label inside the selection. A complex background needs a manual cutout rather than a one-click claim.
Official instructionsPreserve both the cutout and its selection
Use Copy Selection to New Layer (Ctrl+Alt+J). Name it Original product — do not repaint; retain the untouched full photo underneath. The cutout’s alpha preserves the selection between variants: right-click that layer and Select Opaque, or Ctrl-click its thumbnail. Duplicate the working file before experimenting. The cutout, not a "keep logo" prompt, protects the pixels.
Official instructionsGenerate only the background
Restore the bottle selection from the cutout, select the original photo layer, then invert the selection so the background is editable. In the AI docker choose the installed SDXL style, strength 100%, Fill, and prompt A. Leave context around the selected region for edge blending.
Official instructionsKeep each accepted variation on its own layer
Generate a small batch and Apply the best preview to a new layer. Put the protected original cutout above it. Repeat for B and C using the same saved cutout and crop, naming each background. Do not refine the entire composited image afterward: that can redraw the product.
Official instructionsInspect and export the actual deliverables
At 100% check label spelling, lid outline, contact, perspective, shadow direction and halos. Paint a subtle contact shadow on a separate layer below the product if needed. Preserve real reflections rather than claiming they disappeared. Save .kra and export three PNGs. Record checkpoint, prompt, exposed seed, dimensions, strength and plugin version. A fixed seed is not a cross-version output guarantee.
Start with an explicit request.
A: Warm beige seamless paper backdrop and tabletop, subtle paper texture,
soft studio light from upper left, gentle contact shadow at the product
base, clean commercial product photograph, no props, no lettering.
B: Pale blue seamless studio sweep, soft studio light from upper left,
gentle contact shadow at the product base, clean commercial product
photograph, no props, no lettering.
C: Muted sage seamless paper backdrop and tabletop, soft studio light
from upper left, gentle contact shadow at the product base, clean
commercial product photograph, no props, no lettering.Check this before calling it done.
Illustrative expected output, not output observed from a model run.
| Deliverable | Background | Acceptance check |
|---|---|---|
| bottle-beige.png | Warm beige paper | Original label, crop and silhouette unchanged |
| bottle-blue.png | Pale blue sweep | Original label, crop and silhouette unchanged |
| bottle-sage.png | Muted sage paper | Original label, crop and silhouette unchanged |
| working-file.kra | All original and accepted layers | Product cutout above separate named backgrounds |
Requested deliverables, not generated outputs. Attractive thumbnails alone do not establish that the original product survived unchanged.
- Compare every exported label and silhouette at 100% with the original photo
- No bright fringe or floating base; shadow and perspective fit the scene
- The protected cutout remains above the three distinct background layers
Fix the failure, not the wording.
The logo changes
Check that the untouched original cutout is uppermost and opaque; do not send the final composite through whole-image refinement.
Bright fringe
Improve the cutout and mask edge rather than adding adjectives to the prompt.
Old background persists
Verify the background, not the bottle, is selected and strength is 100%.
GPU error
Lower working resolution or choose the documented cloud backend deliberately. Replace Background is experimental, not a reliability shortcut.
When another approach is better
For a plain solid background, a manual cutout and color layer are faster and more controllable. Reflective objects may require a new real photograph under matching lighting.
