What InvokeAI is
InvokeAI is a creative application for controlled image iteration. Its canvas, model management and reusable nodes help an artist work on an image over several steps. Inpainting means generating inside a selected area; outpainting extends an image beyond its existing boundaries. The open-source project is now community-maintained; the former official Invoke.ai hosted service has closed.
These controls make it possible to focus a change on part of a composition instead of regenerating everything from scratch. They do not guarantee that a model will preserve every detail. The selected model and the artist's masks, references and review still determine what changes.
Read the official documentationHow it fits into a workflow
An artist loads or creates an image, selects the region to change and generates alternatives using a compatible model. Accepted results become part of the developing composition, while saved nodes or workflows can organize repeated operations. Keep important original material available so that an unwanted generated change can be compared and corrected.
Examples described as illustrative or proposed trials are editorial suggestions. Documented real builds, when available, are linked separately below.
Requirements, cost and limitations
Hardware needs vary with model, resolution and workflow. You can run the Apache-2.0 core locally or on a third-party GPU host. Models retain their own licenses. Optional external models send generation requests to a provider account and incur that provider's charges. Their controls differ from local models, and the current documentation does not support inpainting through external providers.
Check current access and pricingWhen to choose it and what to compare
Consider InvokeAI for deliberate canvas-based image work. ComfyUI exposes the generation graph more directly, while Krita AI Diffusion adds generation within an established painting application. Choose the working style that makes your intended edits easier to inspect and repeat.
