What Ollama is
Ollama is software for running supported AI models, rather than a model itself. You choose a model, download its files and ask Ollama to run it on your computer. Applications can also send it requests through an API, which is a defined way for one program to communicate with another.
This makes Ollama useful when you want to experiment with a local assistant or connect a document application to a local model. Its documented cloud-model option is a separate choice: installing Ollama locally does not mean every request will be processed locally.
Read the official documentationHow it fits into a workflow
In a document workflow, an interface such as AnythingLLM prepares the question and relevant passages, then sends them to the selected model through Ollama. The model generates the answer; the interface displays it. Ollama supplies the model-running layer, while document organization, retrieval and citation display belong to the surrounding application.
Examples described as illustrative or proposed trials are editorial suggestions. Documented real builds, when available, are linked separately below.
Requirements, cost and limitations
You need a supported operating system, space for the model download and enough memory for both the model and its working context. The runtime has MIT terms; each model has its own license. Local execution uses your hardware, while explicitly selected cloud services have separate access and usage terms.
When to choose it and what to compare
Choose Ollama when a straightforward model-running service is more useful than a complete graphical workspace. LM Studio offers a desktop-first route; llama.cpp exposes lower-level configuration. For a shared service handling many simultaneous requests, compare vLLM's serving requirements rather than assuming a personal local setup will scale unchanged.
