What Runway is
Runway is a hosted creative platform for generating and editing images, video and audio, with creative agents and workflows. It provides a working interface and remote compute, so the creator does not have to operate a local model stack for supported tasks.
The productive use is usually a sequence of directed choices: establish a visual idea, generate alternatives, select useful material and edit it into the larger project. A generated clip is an ingredient, not automatically a finished advertisement or film. Model choice and controls affect the result.
Read the official documentationHow it fits into a workflow
The documented Madonna tour example used generated still images as the basis for Gen-2 image-to-video clips, then camera and motion controls shaped the stage visuals. That historical build illustrates an image-to-video production pattern, not the current interface. A reader adapting the idea would plan a coherent set of shots and review them within the final edit.
Examples described as illustrative or proposed trials are editorial suggestions. Documented real builds, when available, are linked separately below.
Requirements, cost and limitations
The current Free plan provides 125 one-time credits, not a new allowance every month. Paid plans have their own recurring credit allowances, and usage varies by model, duration and resolution. Review rights to input material, output quality and publishing permissions before release. This directory does not measure sales impact, production savings or credit cost per finished scene.

Runway fits creators who prefer a hosted media workflow. ComfyUI offers more explicit control over a self-managed generation graph, while Krita integration keeps image work close to manual painting. Choose based on the medium, control and operational effort the project requires.
