What Open WebUI is
Open WebUI is a browser-based interface that you can host yourself and connect to a model backend. For example, the interface can send a conversation to Ollama or to a compatible hosted API. It supplies the place where people interact with models, rather than being the model that produces the answer.
That separation lets an operator change the backend without building a new chat interface. It also means the privacy boundary depends on the connection: an interface running on your own server can still send prompts to an external model provider.

The operator deploys the interface, configures the model endpoint and sets up persistent storage and access. A user works through the browser, while the backend performs inference. In Techno Tim's documented archive stack, Open WebUI sits alongside Ollama and document-processing components; the archive itself is handled by Paperless tools.
Examples described as illustrative or proposed trials are editorial suggestions. Documented real builds, when available, are linked separately below.
Requirements, cost and limitations
Self-hosting brings responsibility for updates, backups, access control and the model connection. The Open WebUI license includes branding conditions; do not substitute a generic open-source label for the actual terms. Model hosting and infrastructure costs are separate from the interface.
When to choose it and what to compare
Consider Open WebUI when you want to operate a shared or personal model interface independently of the backend. LM Studio offers a desktop-centered starting point, while AnythingLLM emphasizes document workspaces and retrieval. Choose according to the interface and data flow you need to maintain.
