What Claude Code is
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. It can read a repository, edit files and run development commands through supported terminal, editor, desktop or web surfaces. It is a product around models and tools, distinct from both an ordinary Claude conversation and an individual Claude API model.
The useful distinction from autocomplete is that a task can involve several connected steps: understand the existing code, make an edit, run a check and respond to the result. The developer still supplies the objective and reviews whether those steps produced the requested change.
Read the official documentationHow it fits into a workflow
For an illustrative first task, ask for a small bug fix with a clear reproduction and one acceptance test. Read the proposed scope, inspect the resulting diff and check the test output. If the agent changes unrelated files or claims an unrun test passed, those are reasons to narrow and correct the task before merging.
Examples described as illustrative or proposed trials are editorial suggestions. Documented real builds, when available, are linked separately below.
Requirements, cost and limitations
Internet access and an eligible account or supported provider configuration are required; Claude Code is not an offline local-model runtime. Check the billing route, plan limits and deployment-specific features along with the development tools your repository needs. A local client does not establish where model processing occurs, and permissions and credentials must match the task.
Check current access and pricingWhen to choose it and what to compare
Claude Code fits a developer who wants an agentic coding workflow in Anthropic's ecosystem. Aider or OpenCode may be relevant when model-provider choice matters. A general assistant may suffice for explaining a short code excerpt without granting repository or command access.
