What OpenCode is
OpenCode is an open-source coding agent that can work with a software repository through terminal, desktop and web interfaces. A repository is the project's code and supporting files. The agent uses a connected model to interpret a task and work with development tools, rather than merely suggesting a line of text.
Its provider choices are part of the appeal: compatible hosted models or local runtimes can supply the model. The OpenCode interface, the model service and the environment where commands run are separate parts of the workflow. Choosing an open-source client does not make a hosted model call local.
Read the official documentationHow it fits into a workflow
An illustrative task is changing one small behavior in a repository. Give the agent the intended behavior and a test that would demonstrate it, then inspect the changed files and run the relevant checks. The model's explanation is useful context, but the diff—the actual before-and-after file changes—is the evidence of what it did.
Examples described as illustrative or proposed trials are editorial suggestions. Documented real builds, when available, are linked separately below.
Requirements, cost and limitations
You need the client, access to a compatible model and a suitable development environment. Model usage and local hardware can have separate costs from the client. V1 and V2 configuration differ, and V2 default policies are permissive: explicitly restrict shell access, external directories and sensitive files before a first experiment in a disposable branch or project copy.
Check current access and pricingWhen to choose it and what to compare
Consider OpenCode when provider flexibility and its interfaces fit your workflow. Claude Code or Codex offer different product ecosystems, while Aider emphasizes a terminal pair-programming loop. Compare a representative repository task and review burden instead of treating repository stars as proof of coding reliability.
