What n8n is
n8n is a visual workflow-automation platform. A workflow connects a trigger, such as an incoming event, to a series of actions in applications or custom code. AI can be one step in that process, for example interpreting text before a later step stores or presents the result.
It is useful when the problem is moving information between systems consistently. It is not necessary to make every step an autonomous agent: fixed rules can handle predictable work, with a model reserved for the parts that require interpreting unstructured material.
Read the official documentationHow it fits into a workflow
An illustrative first project is classifying an incoming request and preparing a draft response. The trigger collects the request, the model proposes a category and draft, and a review step presents it to a person. The surrounding workflow controls where the information goes and what happens when a step fails.
Examples described as illustrative or proposed trials are editorial suggestions. Documented real builds, when available, are linked separately below.
Requirements, cost and limitations
Choose the managed service or a self-hosted installation, then verify the connectors and actions your accounts permit. Self-hosting makes updates, backups, credentials and uptime your responsibility. Source-available does not mean unrestricted reuse: check the license and edition before embedding or reselling. Hosting, connected services and model calls can contribute separate costs.
Check current access and pricingWhen to choose it and what to compare
Choose a workflow platform when a repeatable process and visible steps are the main need. A personal agent may suit open-ended assignments, while custom code may suit an existing software system. Begin with a draft or classification result before making the workflow responsible for consequential external actions.
