OpenAI dots
An ongoing hosted agent with a cloud computer, connected apps and context across projects in ChatGPT.
- Starting fit
- Research, documents and ongoing projects
- Local access
- Optional connected computer
A personal agent can carry work across tasks and tools rather than only answer a chat message. Compare dots, Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Hermes by the work they can support, where they run and the responsibilities they leave with you.

Dots, Duet and Grok Bot provide a hosted computer. Hermes lets you choose and operate the runtime. Convenience, control, usage and upkeep matter more here than a made-up overall score.
An ongoing hosted agent with a cloud computer, connected apps and context across projects in ChatGPT.
A cloud agent for briefs, connected business apps and assignments that continue while you are away.
Persistent named agents with role context, background work and repeatable routines on a shared cloud computer.
Agent software you operate, with configurable models, execution backends, persistent memory and reusable skills.
Editorial shortlists, not real-world case studies or measured winners.
Dots is worth evaluating when ChatGPT is already your workspace. Grok Bot is another candidate when named roles and handoffs suit the work.
Give both the same sources, one output checklist and a stop-before-publishing boundary. Compare completed artifacts, corrections and usage.
Related practice workshopDuet's briefs and periodic checks fit non-urgent coordination if you are invited and your apps are supported. Microsoft 365 or visible browser takeover needs are a current mismatch.
Try three ordinary days. Record missed items, unnecessary alerts and approval effort, with outgoing messages held for review.
Related practice workshopGrok Bot documents saved skills, schedules and event triggers. Dots is another hosted candidate when the work is already centered on ChatGPT.
Start with a draft customer-risk report. Check connector actions, shared-computer access, team controls and your actual billing before enabling sends.
Related practice workshopHermes offers deployment flexibility when someone can own operations. A local installation alone does not establish local data processing.
Use synthetic data in an isolated backend. Inspect model, browser, tool, memory and message-transport dependencies before adding confidential material.

Start with eligibility rather than capability. A product can sound suitable but still be unavailable to your account, region or organization. A waitlist invitation and a published feature announcement are different things. For self-managed software, installation is only the beginning: model and integration access must also be arranged.
Gradual Pro rollout: 18+, outside the EEA, Switzerland and UK. Business Premium has regional and workspace conditions; Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare beta needs admin enablement. Check your account.
Dots: current access, operation and allowancesResearch preview for US Pro/Max users invited from a waitlist. Not available to Team or Enterprise yet. Announced 21 October, with a safety update on 23 October.
Claude Duet announcement · 21 October 2026Duet: current access and preview limitsIncluded on X Subscription Premium, Super and Ultra. Paid legacy Cursor/Teams and qualifying linked SuperGrok/X Premium+ accounts have other routes. Enterprise arrangements differ.
Grok Bot: current and legacy plansOpen-source software with desktop and CLI options. Supported platforms and execution backends vary; this is an operated deployment, not a hosted-plan entitlement.
Hermes Agent documentationWhere work runs determines what stays available when you close a laptop, which files the agent can reach and who maintains the environment. A hosted computer can continue independently, while a connected local machine must meet its product's availability requirements. A local client does not establish that model processing stays local.
Own cloud computer. Local-computer connection is optional and initially off; that machine must stay online with the app open. Cloud and local browser sessions are separate.
Dots: current access, operation and allowancesOwn cloud computer and browser; tasks continue after the app closes. The current preview cannot access files on your local computer.
Claude Duet announcement · 21 October 2026Duet: current access and preview limitsPersistent cloud computer shared across the account's Bots. Optional Mac/Windows local command execution has its own permission policy; local execution does not imply local model processing.
Grok Bot overviewGrok Bot: computer and appsLocal machine, containers, SSH or supported cloud backends. Jobs need the configured backend and gateway running; a sleeping local host is not always-on hosting.
Hermes Agent documentationHermes: tools and execution backendsHermes: Bot ModeIncluded access is not unlimited work. Background checks, model calls and longer assignments can consume allowances, and sharing a pool with another product changes the practical budget. Self-managed software removes one kind of product fee but can add model, hosting and maintenance costs. Compare the cost of a completed task, not just a subscription headline.
First dot included in Pro and Business Premium with a deeper-work allowance. Temporary launch limits can change; included access is not unlimited work.
Dots: current access, operation and allowancesIncluded in Pro/Max during preview, sharing Claude's session and weekly limits. Background account checks consume that allowance.
Duet: current access and preview limitsCurrent X Subscription shares a weekly pool with Cursor and Grok, with prepaid top-ups. Legacy plans use Bot grants and optional Cursor-billed on-demand usage; linked grants do not stack.
Grok Bot: current and legacy plansMIT software is free. Budget for model/API subscriptions, tool services, hosting or hardware/electricity and maintenance. Optional Nous Portal bundles models and tools; some infrastructure costs remain separate.
Hermes: FAQ, costs and local endpointsHermes: optional Nous Portal servicesA scheduled task, a periodic check and an event-triggered routine wake up in different ways. That affects how quickly something is noticed and what can happen while you are away. Define the expected output and review boundary, and do not use a periodic personal assistant as an urgent-response guarantee.
Projects, schedules and proactive research. Unprompted research tools are read-only: they cannot send, edit apps or control computers. Authorized continuing tasks follow normal action rules.
OpenAI: introducing dots · 29 September 2026Dots: privacy, security and safetyMorning briefs, account checks every few hours and longer tasks while you are away. It is not an immediate-response monitoring service.
Claude Duet announcement · 21 October 2026Background work, scheduled routines, supported event triggers and handoffs between Bots. Verify that a specific connector supports the action your routine needs.
Grok Bot overviewGrok Bot: skills, routines and automationsScheduled jobs, subagents and persistent Bot routines, with the appropriate running backend and gateway configuration.
Hermes Agent documentationHermes: Bot ModeBrowser tools matter when a task requires interacting with a website rather than reading an answer. Being able to watch or take over that browser can help resolve a blocked login or inspect an action. Tool availability still does not guarantee that a particular website permits automation or that every action will succeed.
Cloud browser, connected apps and a computer you can inspect or take over; optional local connection and Codex environments. Some websites block automated access.
OpenAI: introducing dots · 29 September 2026Dots: current access, operation and allowancesConnected apps/plugins and a cloud browser for other sites. You cannot watch or take over that browser yet; there is no model picker.
Claude Duet announcement · 21 October 2026Duet: current access and preview limitsBrowser, files, terminal, connected apps and human takeover. Optional local execution defaults to asking; websites can still block automated access.
Grok Bot overviewGrok Bot: computer and appsConfigurable browser automation, terminal/files, plugins and MCP. Backend and model endpoint choices determine where execution and data processing happen.
Hermes: tools and execution backendsMemory can reduce repeated explanation, but retained context also needs to be managed. Disconnecting an app is not necessarily the same as deleting information already learned from it. Separate conversation memory from files and logged-in browser sessions, especially where several named agents share one computer.
ChatGPT context plus the dot's own retained context. Turning off sharing or disconnecting an app does not delete information already learned.
Dots: privacy, security and safetyClaude memory, skills, connections and eligible past chats. Disconnecting an app does not erase what it learned; memory can be reset.
Claude Duet announcement · 21 October 2026Duet: current access and preview limitsDuet: safety, privacy and security · 23 October 2026Per-Bot preferences, roles and conversation summaries. Working files, browser sessions and logins remain shared across the account.
Grok Bot overviewLocal memory/profile files, session search and reusable skills; optional external memory providers. Check that requested memory writes occurred. Learning here is persisted context, not model-weight training.
Hermes: persistent memoryReview the action boundary, not just the presence of an approval button. Ask which operations can happen without you, where credentials are handled and whether a failed or unanswered approval stops the work. In a self-managed system, an allowlist is one control; it does not substitute for isolation of the operating environment.
Custom Rules and Auto-review, with core safeguards and user-only sensitive steps. Business, Enterprise and Edu data is not used for training by default; personal-plan controls apply.
OpenAI: introducing dots · 29 September 2026Dots: privacy, security and safetyVendor describes consequential-action approvals, separate intent/privacy checks and isolated credential handling. Some actions remain prohibited despite approval; these controls are not a performance guarantee.
Duet: safety, privacy and security · 23 October 2026Auto Review and action rules; local policy defaults to asking. Requires storage, does not support Legacy Privacy Mode, and uses applicable Cursor training opt-out settings.
Grok Bot: approvals, security and privacyGrok Bot: computer and appsCommand approvals, allowlists and isolation options depend on operator configuration. Command matching is not an OS sandbox. Cloud model, tool and memory services have separate data policies.
Hermes: security and containmentHermes: FAQ, costs and local endpointsHermes: optional Nous Portal servicesA missing connector or required interaction can decide the choice before model quality matters. Write down the accounts, files and tools your workflow actually needs, then compare them with the documented limits. Treat an unverified capability as a question to investigate, not as either a promised feature or a confirmed absence.
Access restrictions, sign-in and approval stops can decide fit. Specialist organizational dots are a preview, not a feature available to every subscriber.
OpenAI: introducing dots · 29 September 2026Dots: current access, operation and allowancesDots: privacy, security and safetyNo Microsoft 365 yet, limited Slack functionality, no local files or browser takeover, and no outbound calls or SMS to others. Personal errands are less developed than work tasks.
Claude Duet announcement · 21 October 2026Duet: current access and preview limitsShared account state is not a per-Bot security boundary. Some unattended approval requests expire after about ten minutes without running; an unanswered request is not completed work.
Grok Bot: approvals, security and privacyDeployment, upgrades, secrets and uptime are your responsibility. A small local model is not equivalent to a frontier hosted one; evaluate the exact stack rather than the agent name alone.
Hermes: persistent memoryHermes: security and containmentHermes: FAQ, costs and local endpointsThese are cost structures, not a dollar quote. Checkout prices, taxes and cost per completed workflow were not tested. Account eligibility and enabled integrations must be checked in the account.
These agent selection scenarios are prospective trials. Our Use Cases collection separately documents named builders, their implemented stack and public output.
Explore real implementationsTask success, speed, unattended duration, cost per finished workflow or universal data-residency compliance. Unknowns stay unknown; provider documentation is not a benchmark.
